Lee John Schmidt died on January 25, 2025, at Cape Coral Hospital in Florida after a long and courageous battle with addiction. Though his time on this earth was far too short, he left behind a lifetime of memories for those who loved him.
Born on February 14, 1987, in Watertown, SD, Lee grew up with a bright mind, an adventurous spirit, and a knack for seeing the world in his own unique way. He graduated from high school in 2006 and spent his early life in Watertown. His journey took him across the country—from the plains of South Dakota to the mountains of Colorado, the warmth of Mississippi, and, finally, the sunshine of Florida.
Lee was exceptionally intelligent and endlessly curious, often seeing rules as more of a suggestion than a requirement. Long before most people understood the internet, he had already mastered its depths, effortlessly navigating places others couldn’t even find. His sharp mind was matched by a tender heart, evident to those fortunate enough to know him well.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: the thrill of fast cars, the challenge of tinkering with gadgets, and the satisfaction of beating his dad at pool and poker. He cherished his long walks with his mom and had a special place in his heart for cats, finding solace in their quiet companionship. But above all, he adored his nieces and nephew, treasuring every moment spent with them.
Lee’s journey was not without hardship, and he faced his struggles with resilience and courage. Addiction was part of his story, but it does not define him. He was so much more—kind, generous, and deeply loved. In his honor, we choose to remember the beauty he brought to our lives: his wit, his warmth, and the love he shared so freely.
Lee’s life is a reminder to lead with compassion, to extend kindness even in difficult moments, and to always support those who are struggling. May we carry his memory forward by embracing others with the same love and understanding that he deserved.
