Michael R. Matlack was born on May 28, 1991, in Flemington, New Jersey, and from the very beginning, he brought a light and warmth into the world that touched everyone who knew him. He grew up in Milford, NJ, surrounded by the love of his parents, Rand and Becky, and filled his days with curiosity, creativity, and kindness.
From a young age, Michael showed a natural determination and competitive spirit. In junior high, he took to wrestling with passion, winning numerous trophies and earning the respect of his teammates. Outside of sports, he found another great love, music. Playing guitar with his dad became one of his greatest joys, and over the years, he joined bands, explored different styles, and poured his heart into every note.
Michael’s hands were as skilled in building as they were in music. Working alongside his father in the family business, Ace Construction, he learned the craft and pride that came from creating something lasting. He had a remarkable work ethic, but even more remarkable was his gentle, giving nature. He was always willing to help others, offering a listening ear, a smile, or his time to anyone who needed it.
That same compassion led Michael to befriend and support someone struggling with substance use disorder; a decision made out of kindness and loyalty. Tragically, the disease that touched his friend’s life would also enter his own, beginning a difficult battle. Michael faced his struggle with courage, entering detox twice and surrounding himself with others committed to sobriety. His family stood by him every step of the way, loving him fiercely and never giving up hope.
The loss of his father, Rand, and his beloved dog, Belle, weighed heavily on Michael, making his journey even harder. On September 28, 2016, at just 25 years old, Michael’s life was cut short. His passing left an ache in the hearts of those who loved him. This is a pain that time does not erase.
Michael will always be remembered for his sensitivity, his smile, his music, and the way he loved his family and friends. His story is one of talent, love, struggle, and resilience. Though his life ended far too soon, his impact lives on in the memories he left behind and the love that will never fade. Every day, Michael is missed. Every day, he is loved. And every day, his mother and all who knew him carry his memory forward, honoring the beautiful soul he was.
