James Ropp was a loving, energetic young man with a big personality and an adventurous spirit. He loved sports, jiu-jitsu, mountain biking, playing Call of Duty and spending time with his cats, Tigger and Boo. James was deeply loved by his family and friends, and his life continues to touch everyone who knew him.
On October 13, 2018, James lost his life to an overdose at only 19 years old. His death forever changed the lives of those who loved him, especially his mother, Janet. In the years following his loss, she had to learn how to carry unimaginable grief while finding a way to continue living and eventually complete her college education.
Janet shares their story in her memoir, Dear James, an honest and deeply personal account of love, loss, addiction, codependency and learning to live after the death of a child. Through her writing, she speaks openly about the realities of grief—the heartbreak, isolation, questions and continuing bond between a mother and her son.
By sharing James’s life and story, Janet hopes to keep his memory alive, raise awareness about substance use and remind grieving parents that they do not have to walk this journey alone. James will always be more than the way he died. He was a beloved son, brother, friend and unique young man whose life mattered—and whose story may now help another family feel seen, understood and less alone.
