Her laughter filled rooms with joy, and her compassionate spirit touched hearts far and wide. Kelcy Jordon Orr, beloved daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend, died unexpectedly on December 23, 2023. Born on April 22, 2008, in Jacksonville, Florida, Kelcy was a light in the lives of those who knew her, and her memory will forever be cherished.

Kelcy’s journey began with a long-awaited phone call that changed the lives of Jenny and Jim Orr. After years of infertility, the Orrs made the decision to adopt, and soon they were chosen by a mother in Florida. They flew to the hospital in Florida and laid eyes on their daughter for the first time. Jim recalls seeing Kelcy in the nursery, “She was just something you’ll never forget—this tiny, perfect little thing that fit right in your hand.” Jenny echoed this sentiment: “The first time I held her, I knew I wasn’t going to give her back. She was coming home.”

From that moment on, Kelcy was the center of their world. She was more than just a daughter—she was their everything. Jim says she had endless potential, and Jenny remembered how Kelcy’s energy and athleticism led them to enroll her in gymnastics and dance. Kelcy was always moving, her feet barely touching the ground, and she excelled in everything she tried.

A student at Vermillion High School, Kelcy was dedicated to her studies and thrived in sports. She broke Yankton’s 22-year-old record in the 4×200 relay event and placed 7th in the South Dakota State track and field tournament in the 4×200 meter dash. Her proudest accomplishments, however, were shared with her family, whom she adored deeply.

Kelcy’s creativity knew no bounds. Whether she was painting, crafting, or writing, she expressed herself through her art, captivating others with her words and imagination. Her vibrant spirit and strong faith were evident throughout her life, having been baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in June 2008 and confirmed there in October 2022. Her faith guided her through the ups and downs, offering her strength and hope.

Despite her many achievements, Kelcy’s life was not without challenges. Being of mixed race, she struggled with acceptance and experienced bullying from an early age.  Despite the support she got from her parents and through therapy, along with her efforts to manage her anxiety and depression, the invisible enemy of fentanyl stole her away too soon.

On the morning of December 23, 2023, Jenny Orr found Kelcy lifeless in her bedroom, a baggie with four blue pills beside her. It was later revealed that she had taken one of those pills the night before, not knowing it contained fentanyl. The heartbreaking loss of their vibrant, beautiful daughter is a pain the Orrs will carry forever. “Fentanyl, one pill can kill. You just never know what is out there,” Jim warned. “Unfortunately, the fentanyl got her—the addiction, the anxiety, the depression.”

Kelcy had dreams of becoming a forensic scientist and running track in college. She wanted so much more from life, but fentanyl took away all her hopes and dreams at just 15 years old. Kelcy’s life was full of promise, and she will forever be remembered for the joy she brought to those who loved her. In her honor, we must continue to raise awareness and fight against the dangers of fentanyl, so no other family has to endure such a devastating loss.
