In loving memory of Bobby, a son, father, and grandfather, whose life was marked by a courageous battle with addiction. Bobby’s story serves as a reminder of the complex and challenging journey faced by those struggling with substance use disorder, and the impact it has on families.

Bobby’s mother, Kristy, discovered that her son had been silently wrestling with addiction long before she became fully aware of the depths of his struggles. In her determination to help him find a way out, she chose to administer “tough love,” refusing to enable his addiction by providing money or a roof over his head. It was during this period that the true extent of Bobby’s addictions became painfully clear to Kristy.

Frightened by the severity of his condition, Kristy pleaded with Bobby to acknowledge his problem. She tirelessly searched for programs and rehab facilities where he could seek help. Bobby, too, recognized the gravity of his addiction and willingly entered rehab facilities on multiple occasions. However, the battle was far from easy, as the programs didn’t fully address the mental health issues he grappled with.

Despite the challenges, Bobby’s love for his family was unwavering. He left behind seven children, a granddaughter, and missed the opportunity to meet his grandson, who was born in December, a moment he had eagerly anticipated. This loss was particularly poignant for Kristy, as Bobby was her second child to pass away. In 2010, her youngest daughter succumbed to Huntington’s disease, plunging her into a whirlwind of emotions and pain.

Now, Kristy carries a profound void in her heart with the loss of both her daughter and son. Despite the immense grief, she strives to hold onto the love and responsibility she has for her remaining family members. Kristy is a mother to her middle child, Aaron, and a grandmother and great-grandmother to seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Additionally, her biggest responsibility is caring for her 51-year-old brother with Down syndrome.

The pain of losing Bobby and the weight of her responsibilities often weigh heavily on Kristy’s shoulders. She continues to send texts to her son, a testament to the enduring love and connection between a mother and her child. It’s a love that transcends addiction, grief, and the challenges life presents.
